This Homemade Amish White Bread Recipe produces the best soft and fluffy loaf you’ll ever make.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow to sit for 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Add the salt and vegetable oil and stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add in the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until dough is formed.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a cloth. Let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing.

Notes

  • For an extra soft crust, brush with melted butter just after baking.
  • Store bread wrapped in plastic wrap to keep it fresh.
